Minnesota Paid Family and Medical Leave

Minnesota Paid Leave helps you be there when it matters. Because no matter who you are-a friend, a neighbor, a spouse or a family member-we all need time to take care of ourselves and the ones we love.

Qualifying Leave Reasons

Medical Leave

Employee’s own serious health condition

Family Leave

  • Bond with a new child (birth, adoption, or foster care placement)
  • Care for a family member with a serious health condition
  • Military exigency
  • Safety leave if the employee or a family member is subject to domestic violence, sexual assault, or stalking

Benefit Waiting Period

None, however the minimum period for which benefits are payable, except for a bonding leave, is a single qualifying event of at least 7 calendar days.

Benefit Amount

  • 90% of employees average wages up to 50% of the statewide average weekly wage; plus
  • 66% of an employee’s average wages in excess of 50% of the statewide average weekly wage up to 100% of the statewide average weekly wage; plus
  • 55% of an employee’s average wages that exceed 100% of the statewide average weekly wage

Maximum Weekly Benefit

$1,423 effective 1/1/26

Maximum Leave Duration

12 weeks

No more than 20 weeks in a benefit year for all leaves combined

Contributions

  • 0.88% of taxable wages
  • Employees may pay up to 50% of the cost
  • For employers with less than 30 employees in MN and an employer average weekly wage that is less than or equal to 150% of the statewide average weekly wage, the rate is 75% of the full cost and employers would pay 25% of the cost and the employee would pay the remainder
