FAQs

When you feel ready, make funeral or memorial arrangements, locate the will (if one exists), notify Social Security or the Veterans Administration, if applicable and order certified death certificates.

We've put together a helpful checklist to guide you through the next steps and make a difficult time a little easier to navigate.

No, many steps can wait. Some actions — like ordering death certificates or notifying Social Security — may be time-sensitive, but most decisions can be made at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

Notify Equitable of the death. You can file a claim online, where clear instructions and a list of required documents will be provided. Alternatively, request a "claim packet" or "claimant’s statement."

Commonly required documents include:

  • A death certificate (certified if possible)
  • Completed claim forms
  • Policy or contract information (if available)
  • Proof of identity for the beneficiary (e.g., Social Security Number or tax ID)

Additional documentation may be required based on the type of policy or contract.

You may need multiple copies (certified if possible)  to claim benefits, update accounts, transfer property ownership, and address tax matters. Many people request extras since photocopies are often not accepted.

Death certificates may be obtained from either the funeral director or the County Clerk's office. You may also consult the National Center for Health Statistics website for assistance.

Not necessarily. You may not be required to use insurance proceeds for certain debts. It’s often helpful to seek guidance from a financial advisor before making payments.

  • Life Insurance: Proceeds are generally income-tax free, though interest earned while held by the company may be taxable.
  • Annuities/Retirement Benefits: These may be partially or fully taxable as ordinary income, depending on whether payment election or the funds were pre-tax or post-tax contributions. Consult a tax advisor for guidance.

Processing times can vary depending on the type of benefit and whether all required documents have been received. Make sure to submit complete information so you can help avoid delays.

Stay cautious. Scams can occur after a death. If something feels illegitimate, pause and seek advice before taking action.
